Who Are we?

We are a group of Christians who originally started a school for children in our community, “Academia de Matematicas Amanda Salazar” (Math Academy of Amanda Salazar in memory of Amanda Salazar – a woman who was not only a great mother to her own children, but also a great teach and guide for so many children for more than 40 years).
We began to see more than a few problems with students. Although the cost to attend school was strictly for materials only, such as pencils and paper, there were many children who couldn’t even afford that.
Other children would enroll, and then only show up to class once in a while. After investigating, we found that they lived far away with their parents, or they lived in the equivalent of garbage dumps, and bathed in the ocean water when they did bathe.
The fact is that we have found so many homeless children that parents simply left alone one day becuase they couldn’t afford to feed them, or the children have run away from abusive situations and now live on the streets with the other children.
And so we took the acronym AMAS (both the name of the school, and the spanish word for love) and dedicated ourselves to helping the children in our community. Our struggles are many, but with God for us, who can be against us?
